What does a title promise?
A title can introduce two names, as in Oliver and Greta. Or it can immediately create tension, as in We Never Called Ourselves Fiancés Because We Were Accomplices. Before the first page, it suggests a way into the story.
These two titles are upcoming Booknowledge fiction releases. For now, we can consider the questions they suggest without revealing a plot: how much does the name we give a relationship matter? And what does that definition leave out?
Reading what isn’t said
When reading a relationship between characters, we can pay attention to hesitations as well as words. A dialogue may interest us for what it explains or for the question it leaves open. That is one pleasure of fiction: not needing to settle every interpretation immediately.
